Yes, you read it right! In November 2014, it was announced that ‘vape’ was 2014’s word of the year. This isn’t really a surprise to many, as vaping has become such a popular phenomenon in recent times, being used to describe the act of smoking an electronic cigarette. The ‘smoke’ produced when exhaling is known as vapor, so this is how the term came about.
In the Oxford Dictionary, the word is described as follows: Vape (verb): “to inhale and exhale the vapor produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device.” The word can also be used as a noun to describe the device, for example: a vape device.
The term ‘vaping’ was first coined by the author Robert Stepney in 1983, but it has become so popular recently that it’s said that “you are 30 times more likely to come across the word ‘vape’ than you were two years ago.” The announcement also notes that you are 30 times more likely to hear the word “vape” from someone you know who just started doing it.
Vaping beat out several other contenders including ‘bae’ meaning a term of endearment for one’s romantic partner and ‘slacktivism, which refers to a sort of lazy Internet protest.
The popularity of e-cigarettes has grown significantly over recent times, with around 4 million Americans using e-cigarettes (otherwise known as vaping). What makes vaping so appealing is the fact that one can obtain the same feelings associated with smoking regular cigarettes, but without the harmful tobacco inhalation. It is also less offensive to outsiders, which is why vaping is allowed in many public places such as restaurants and offices. Other health benefits of e-cigarettes include the fact that they are a great tool for quitting smoking.
It is interesting to note that although e-cigarettes and ‘vaping’ have been around for many years, it was only in 2009 that the term ‘vaping’ started to appear more frequently in mainstream culture. Since then, the trend has taken off with vaping individuals being spotted everywhere you turn. E-juice refills are available in many different flavours and this makes vaping even more appealing, as opposed to mainstream cigarettes which are filled with harmful tobacco.
With all the hype, we think that this ‘word of the year’ award is pretty cool and well deserved.
Now, if anyone states that vaping is not a real word, you can proudly show them this article!
Happy vaping everyone!
